Where internal analysis and external expectations meet
In a changing world, our businesses are changing, and all our stakeholders have a role to play in adapting our business model as, together with our customers, we evolve from a transactional business to a service business.
We have established dialogue with both internal and external stakeholders (customers, employees, suppliers and civil society) to prioritise our CSR challenges and express our commitment, inspired by our ethos of “mutual commitment” for innovative, efficient and sustainable development.
This commitment covers three areas.
Three emerging themes
Our business challenges are crucial. We need to adapt our products and services to demographic, societal and environmental changes and new consumer practices. At the same time, they must take into account the digital requirements of transformation and big data processing.
Human resources management
Human resources management is clearly key, with expectations as regards fair pay, labour-management dialogue, diversity and skills development.
Business ethics, good governance and risk management are inseparable from responsible governance.
Measuring our environmental impact
Since 2011, the Covéa Group’s various companies have measured their activities’ carbon footprint and put in place action plans to limit the related greenhouse gas emissions. Our greenhouse gas measurement methods are broader than those required by the applicable regulatory framework.
As a result, since 2011, most of the Group’s emissions have been attributable to:
– the management of its operating and investment property (71,451 CO2 Teq)
– employee travel, including business trips and commuting (41,641 CO2 Teq).
The Group has implemented a number of initiatives to reduce emissions from these two sources:
- Covéa Real Estate, which is responsible for managing investment and operating property for the whole Group, systematically analyses the environmental impact reduction associated with new builds, renovation and maintenance, and seeks certification or accreditation wherever possible. In addition, the process of applying for energy savings certificates is systematised for all eligible cases.
- As regards travel, the Group actively encourages work car sharing via the Coveaturage carpooling platform. Covéa’s main operating sites have recharging points for employees with electric vehicles, while employees at some sites have the use of company bicycles for both private and work journeys.
Lastly, Covéa continues to encourage group and individual videoconferences to limit business travel: in 2017, 29,179 reservations were made for videoconferences at the various Covéa sites, 27,339 in 2016.
Sustainable resources management
Water: The Group takes its water supply from the public drinking water network. Daily water consumption is low for our activity most of it being attributable to company restaurants. The related inter-company restaurants’ managers are the target of awareness raising initiatives. Meanwhile, we put in place various systems at all our operating sites to reduce water consumption.
Energy: Covéa’s sites are connected to the national electricity grid and thus benefit from each national network’s share of renewable energy. The implementation of new energy management software makes savings possible on consumption related to lighting and heating, ventilation and air conditioning.
Paper: An illustration of Covéa’s commitment to reducing paper consumption are the changes to its work processes, such as the deployment of electronic document management (EDM), invoicing for printing certain documents, the development of electronic versions of contractual and commercial documents and the introduction of customer correspondence by e-mail and SMS.
Waste treatment: Covéa employees’ service activity generates various types of waste, such as paper, cardboard and non-hazardous industrial waste. Covéa’s strategy covers waste’s entire life cycle, from upstream reduction and sorting at source to collection, disposal and recovery. As regards the investment property renovation and operating site maintenance activity, all these measures are integrated into the project management.
Covéa uses its brands to promote the protection of biodiversity:
- GMF has been a partner of the French national parks organisation since 2008. This partnership has focused on environmental patronage since 2014, by supporting operations to preserve and restore biodiversity or reintroduce emblematic species, as well as environmental engineering projects.
- MAAF, which chose the dolphin as its symbol in 1990, has been involved in related conservation efforts for many years, participating in research carried out by the Cotentin cetaceans study group (GECC), which studies the dolphins and whale populations along the coastlines of Normandy and Brittany.
- MMA, owner of the Le Mans California site, has its offices in the middle of a 20-hectare forest that is the subject of a Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) agreement with the French Chamber of Agriculture. The wealth of operations targeting this forest is financed by the sale of wood.
Our initiatives to adapt to climate change
Covéa carries out its insurance activities taking into account climate change impact in its technical approach to risk. It offers cover tailored to climate change and major societal changes to all its brands’ customers, whether individuals, self-employed professionals or companies.
Our environmental value-added offers
We now offer insurance for new collaborative modes of transport such as car-sharing, mobility and peer-to-peer renting. Our “mobility” solution, for example, covers the excess payable by the policyholder in the event of a claim on a vehicle rented from a hire car company with high deductibles or from a private individual or a car-sharing company. Our “rental” solution, meanwhile, offers protection to both the policyholder and he vehicle renter. Carpooler insurance is also included in all MAAF, MMA and GMF motor policies at no extra cost.
In the building industry, MMA offers a product to protect companies that carry out energy performance, asbestos and lead assessments or issue 2012 thermal regulation certificates. It also insures new risks through its cover of hydroelectric, cogeneration, wind, solar photovoltaic, biomass and methanation power plants.
Managing our claims
When it comes to motor accidents, our environmental approach is illustrated by our introduction of mobile panel beating units to repair hail-damaged vehicles on the roadside, thereby helping limit carbon emissions related to transport and the consumption of non-renewable resources. We site the units as close as possible to the affected customers to facilitate access to this service.
Covéa continues its partnerships with large paint manufacturers such as Axalta and PPG for the use of solvent-free paint.
Since 2015, Covéa has acquired CESVI France and in so doing given a boost to the development of new vehicle repair techniques.
If a damaged vehicle is more than five years old, we also provide the customer with the option of using a pre-used rather than a new part. This only applies to removable parts and lights.
Meanwhile, our “self-care” solution enables the policyholder to take certified photos of vehicle damage in the event of small claims.
We operate a number of similar initiatives under our home insurance solutions, such as the creation of a network of sustainable development experts specialising in specific building techniques (timber frames, solar photovoltaic energy, etc.).
