Covéa, involved in French Tech

Covéa actively supports innovative projects in the areas of ‘insurtech’ and new mobilities, drawing on the local roots of its MAAF and MMA brands.

Inventing the insurance of the future

Through its MMA brand, Covéa has been a partner of the Le Mans Tech organisation since April 2017. The group has also been a member of Niort Tech, spear head of the French Assurtech (insurtech) initiative, since February 2018 via MAAF.

The aim of these two organisations is to draw on the specific characteristics and historical skills found in their respective business areas, Le Mans city and Niort Urban Community (Communauté d’Agglomération du Niortais) to meet the challenges of digital transformation by creating agile and efficient ecosystems.

By leaning on its brands’ local roots and on the mutual values of collective effort and cooperation to support innovative start-ups and businesses, Covéa aims to encourage new solutions to respond to new insurance challenges, whether in the areas of mobility, living environment, health or the silver economy.

These initiatives will enable Covéa to benefit from the agility and creativity of the selected start-ups and partner businesses, giving it preferential access to the services created and enabling it to better satisfy its customers’ needs.

Insurtech and new mobilities

Bruno Lacoste, MAAF's Head of Marketing and Communication, and Thierry Crahès, Head of MMA’s Agents Development, explain the goals and issues at stake for Niort Tech and Le Mans Tech, and the themes embedded in these accelerators.

Niort Tech, innovation at the heart of the capital of the French mutual sector

As the birthplace of French mutual insurance, Niort hosts the headquarters of numerous insurance companies, including that of MAAF. The insurance sector continues to account for close to 15,000 jobs in the Niort region.

At the beginning of 2018, five major local insurers MAAF, MAIF, MACIF, Groupama and IMA joined forces with the Niort Urban Community and the employers’ federation (Medef) of the Deux-Sèvres region to create Niort Tech, a structure that defines itself as a digital ecosystem designed to support the development of innovative Insurtech start-ups.

French Assurtech, accelerating Insurtech

Niort Tech spearheads the French Assurtech initiative, which acts as project accelerator for the start-ups selected. For a support period of nine months, these start-ups have access to the expertise and resources of Niort Tech’s members. The aim is to help 25 to 30 start-ups over three years.

For this first accelerator programme, the emphasis was placed on four main themes: blockchain, artificial intelligence, big data and customer experience.

Concrete achievements

At the end of the first season, several projects have managed to raise funds and find business outlets, such as Testamento, France’s first online will service, which has joined Covéa’s services platform.

Seven start-ups are currently in the running for season 2, including Golem.ai, which develops business automation and assistance services using language processing artificial intelligence (mails, voice, documents, etc.).

Le Mans Tech, inventing new mobility in Le Mans

Businesses, cutting edge start-ups and public/private research laboratories working on mobility have been in Le Mans for many years. This is the case of MMA in particular, the city’s leading private-sector employer and long-standing insurer of risk linked to the different forms of mobility.

Drawing on this rich pool of expertise, in April 2017 the Le Mans city authorities teamed up with Automobile Club de l’Ouest, the organiser of the mythical 24 Hours of Le Mans car race, and a panel of major local businesses, including MMA, to create Le Mans Tech.

Le Mans Tech is a certified member of the French Tech #Cleantech #Mobility network, a government initiative aimed at placing France among the major start-up nations. It brings together businesses at local level, from start-ups to large corporations, and local authorities so that they can work together on the mobility of the future.

X-Mobility, international new mobility

Held in the MMArena stadium in Le Mans, X-Mobility is an international trade fair that enables start-ups, industrial companies and institutions to create synergies and accelerate the development and industrialisation of sustainable new mobility solutions.

The event features multilingual conferences, round tables and exhibitions centred on subjects such as artificial intelligence, connectivity, driverless cars, smart cities, etc. and attended by experts from all across the world.

Emerging innovative businesses

One of Le Mans Tech’s priority goals is to attract and federate new talents and enable innovative local businesses to develop at national and international level.

The success of companies such as Sound to Sight, a sound design company, and Furion, a designer and manufacturer of hybrid motorbikes, are a shining example.
